Interestingly, I’ve never applied for a role in my sustainability career through a recruiter or recruitment firm. There are few to choose from and those that do exist, I find they significantly lack understanding of the sector, they fail to:
Most of today’s recruitment firms in our space are not placing the right candidates in the right roles – this could be a similar complaint in many industries, but within sustainability this is a critical fail. Without an insight into future trends and a real grasp of the industry, recruiters lacking in these knowledge and skills are always going to be limited in the service they can provide and the candidates they can deliver. Responsible business and CSR are fast progressing, and we need key team members within it to drive the correct approach for us to all be successful in future sustainability goals.
My interest in recruitment in this space has grown over the past few years, I’ve started to notice that key roles that have been filled (especially new roles) have had a high churn – usually in the 1-2-year range. This is unfortunate for the company footing the bill especially as it’s usually outside of any financial “rebate” period, but more importantly, the whole switching roles is disruptive to delivery. For the candidate it’s also less than ideal, as such a short placement raises questions by future employers about ‘why have you moved on so quickly’, and in such a short time frame it’s hard for the candidate to draw positives from the experience.
Even worse than the wrong candidate leaving is the wrong candidate staying! This is an anonymous sentiment from one of my clients:
“I was growing my team in a rush as I have a lot to deliver. I very much regret recruiting the first person who came along. This person is my number two and it turns out they are very difficult to work with and not what I hoped for at all. Now it is difficult to move ahead with them. I genuinely regret not using a professional recruiter to help me with that search as I’d be in a much better position now”
This seems to be a growing trend and there is a need for improvement in this recruitment space. There is a lack of good, knowledgeable recruitment firms, as a result, companies sometimes find their own candidates through online platforms and jobs boards such as LinkedIn for example. I’m often re-posting these roles on LinkedIn from my contacts within the sector, But I can’t help but think this is slightly risky for them as:
It feels absolutely the right time to launch 3shifts Talent.
